I rediscovered a cool dim sum place in my neighborhood last weekend. I have no clue what the name of it is, but it's on the east side of 8th just north of Webster, about 2/3 of the way up the block.

Sunday I bought two chicken buns (chicken, lots of ginger, etc.) that were huge, a taro ball, and two fist-sized sesame balls. Grand total: $2.25.

Does anybody know what's in the sweetish dark sauce that is served with rice noodle rolls?

    Hi Patti,

If I am not mistaken, typically the rice noodle rolls come in the shrimp, pork, or beef varieties and are sectioned into thirds. The sweetish dark sauce is soy sauce. The varieties at the sit-down dim sum retaurants are preferred because rather than sitting in the outside displays, they are served fresh from the kitchen and are kept warm on the carts.

I don't think it's soy sauce-- it's sweet rather than salty.

In poking around, it seems to be oyster sauce mixed with chicken broth and some other minor stuff.

I think that sauce you are inquiring about is just very
sweet, dark and thick soy sauce.
You can fine that type of soy sauce in Asian markets,
or prehaps, it could be Housin sauce.

TIN's has a place in downtown Oakland and out here in Walnut Creek. It's not very expensive - I can highly recommend the one out here - so I can only assume teh mothership which financed the expansion ain;t half bad.

Unfortunately, Tin's in Oakland has now changed hands. It has now been renamed. The good news is that the new owners now provide more generous portions and place more emphasis on presentation. As an added bonus, the wait during the weekdays is not too bad.

Not sure what's specifically served with what you call "rice noodle rolls" (not a name familiar to me), but if it's thick there's a good chance it's hoisin sauce. (It's what's commonly served with mu shu dishes & i believe also with peking duck, as well as various other Chinese dishes.)
...& if you're asking 'cuz you love it, it can be found fairly easily in any market that sells bottled Asian food products, even ordinary places like Safeway.

OOOpps - hit 'send' before adding: Thanks for the tip - sounds like something to definitely check out! I miss my dim sum takeout feasts....
BTW, since you don't know the name to be able to call, do you know how late they're open? Thanks again.
