I've been to Jade Villa in Oakland many times. It's usually pretty good but the last time it was just swimming in grease and I'm not sure I can go back. Anyone have any favorites in the east bay they can recommend?

Sun, June 13, 2004 - 11:10 PMThis posting is awhile after your original, but Legendary Palace in Oakland has a pretty good following, and, the digs are pretty palatial being that it is a renovated old chinatown building.
Dinner is pretty good as well.
If you are looking for take-out, I like Tao Yuen, the Sui Mai and Har Gow are really large, Today we spent $11.04 and had enough left over from two to have another meal. -

The Old Place--391 Grand Ave in Oakland
Sun, June 27, 2004 - 2:41 PMJust got back from a lovely dim sum with: Pool Bacchus, Emily, Ricky Lee Robinson, Amy Kins & Scott Manley.
6 people (2 who were eatin' light) = $32
Small place, excellent frequency of carts, nice variety, no wait (at 12:30!).
Recommended! -

Re: East Bay dim sum?
Mon, July 5, 2004 - 8:34 PMTin's in Oakland has opened a place out here in Walnut Creek - called Tin's Tea House. It's excellent.
Almost as good as Ton Kiang (not quite in the league as YankSing) - but it's prices are incredibly cheap! Worth driving out here to WC. Right on Mt. Diablo as you come off of 24. -

Re: East Bay dim sum?
Thu, November 18, 2004 - 8:20 AMthere is a new spot on grand ave right next to the golden bear sports bar. i think it is called the "old place" or something like that.
they serve dimsum everyday and a lunch for two with tea totals around $10 -

Re: East Bay dim sum?
Fri, November 19, 2004 - 12:12 AMIt's probably been mentioned before, but for excellent takeout dim sum in Oakland visit the Sum Yee Pastry at 918 Webster and 10th or the Sun Sing Pastry at 382 8th between Webster and Franklin. Items range from $0.45 to $1.50. The goodies are hidden in the stacked steamers behind the counter. There you will find plenty of steamed dumplings and wrapped rice packets. They have fair illustrations on their website at www.dimsumonline.com. Their losses on their prices are recouped in their delivery costs.

Re: East Bay dim sum?
Sat, December 4, 2004 - 9:29 AMFor quick, grab-it-and-go dim sum I like Best Dim Sum & Pastry at 723 East 12th Street. Best to hit it in the morning, as that's when they do most of their business. The $1.50 big chicken bao, filled with chicken, Chinese sausage and egg can be a decent breakfast all by itself.
For sit down places, I like King of King on the weekends (again, go early) which is at 1139 East 12th Street.

If you're non-Asian it helps to know a little Cantonese or, better yet, go with a friend who does, as they sometimes automatically do the "Oh, white person, you want the battered shrimp with sweet and sour sauce..." thing and you may miss out on the best items on offer.
Off the top of my head, I'd reccommend the har gao, the clams in black bean sauce, stewed chicken feet, anything with cha shu (BBQ pork) in it, gai lan in oyster sauce, congealed pork blood (if that's your cup of tea) and although I'm often wary of the egg custard tarts, (had too many really awful ones) theirs were very tasty and not at all greasy.
But do avoid the battered shrimp.

Sun, January 16, 2005 - 1:15 PMHong Kong East Village in Emeryville (Marina). Kind of pricey though. Closest one to Berkeley, and my new favorite in the East Bay. I also like Legendary Palace.

Re: East Bay dim sum?
Mon, March 14, 2005 - 2:35 PMHK East Ocean is a great place for dim sum. They have a huge selection and a really nice sitting area w/ views of the bay. I highly recommend their big bowl of tripe w/ radishes & the beef shank w/ jellyfish. They also have a pretty good variety of dumplings (shanghai, shrimp, chiu-chow, pork, etc..). Make sure you get the corresponding sauces/mustards with the dumplings. There's also this sliced tofu plate topped with thousand-year egg and spices... delicious, so keep an eye out for it. Their XO sauce panfried rice noodles, while not the tops like Harbor Village in SF, is getting better and better every time.
I've been going to this place with my family for many years now and it's always consistent and has quick and friendly service. HK East Ocean can get really busy on the weekends so get there early! :)

Mon, March 14, 2005 - 11:04 AMHi Amykins,
I like this one dim sum place in Alameda. I thought the variety and the quality was pretty good. It's called East Ocean Seafood Restaurant in Alameda.

Re: East Bay dim sum?
Fri, June 1, 2007 - 11:07 AMSuper good and cheap - Yoho on 8th at Webster. It is really excellent. Peony is also good but pricey, worth it for out-pf-town friends though. Yoho has many locals, great dishes and is extremely cheap. -

Re: East Bay dim sum?
Fri, June 8, 2007 - 5:23 PMArrrggh! Total grief. Yo-Ho appears to have closed. I've tried it twice and it has not been open - and their is an ominous looking notice in the window. Since it is some Asian alphabet I'm a bit stumped. I'm wearing black for at least a week!
